Ann Symes

Elements: earth fire

As with her work in earlier exhibitions, Elements: air water and Wood: growth patterns, Ann has continued to limit the use of materials to charcoal and graphite powders, acrylic gouache but with the addition of powdered, earth coloured pigments.

She has been working simultaneously towards four exhibitions with elemental themes and was therefore bearing in mind all the elements (air, water, earth, fire, wood and metal) which often resulted in overlapping ideas. Sometimes the wood grain has represented wood and at others water and contour lines.

Again, the aim was for simplicity, focusing on surface and enhancing the wood grain in these works to be seen mainly as contour lines.

The "Burn" drawings are from an older series which demonstrates Ann's love of mark making, repetition and layering.  The series developed through experimentation with different materials starting with incense sticks for burning finer papers and materials and progressing to larger soldering irons for more robust papers.

It was this process that accidentally led to Ann's first woodblock print.
