Ann Symes - Linear expression exhibition

These drawings are not new works but have been made at different times. Only one has been shown before.  Connecting them all is the repetition of marks, a common thread in Ann's work.  The rhythmic echo of marks creates a balanced sense of order and  meditative quality.

Reaching that stage was like an active meditation in that concentration and focus were needed to place the marks. The chalk drawing, "Still", for example was created by striking the paper numerous times with a piece of chalk to build up the layers.   In other pieces a soldering iron was used to burn holes through the paper as a starting point.
