Abstract aesthetic 2025

Memory and reflection, through a tacit touch, knowledge and passion are all part of why Katharine creates these abstract weavings and drawings.

Last summer, she wove the linen and cotton paper work, ‘Woven Dialect’. The colour combination blue and red brought memories of ball point pens that were popular in the 1970’s. These utilitarian pens were part of Katharine’s Cumbrian childhood. The archival pens she has sourced run smooth, she lets the pens disclose their own text in her hand; free flowing, free of sentences, grammar and spelling.

Katharine looks deep within herself in all her works; reflection is something she can’t escape. The weaving has been her novel, her music, her poem. She has taken this known language, and looked at her family home, close to Swaledale, and how Cumbrian materials might inform her practice.

The pencil drawings use Cumbrian materials. This is in answer to Katharine’s woven works where materials were found in Manhattan and created in Japan. These meaningful materials are as much a home to her as Cumbria is, all reflected on from her West Sussex studio.
