Interior space exhibition
Katie has always loved painting the stuff around her, the everyday spaces of studio and home.
She is fascinated by the way we inhabit interior spaces as sensory, physical visual and
emotional spaces. Traces of history, mirrors of ourselves. From simple still lives to stately homes, Katie has spent the last 10 years following her own Roaming Residencies project- wherever she goes, she draws and paints. As a result of her wanderings, she has been invited to work in some visually and historically fascinating places.
The paintings in Interior Space are from an informal residency at Danny House, an Elizabethan stately home in Hurstpierpoint, West Sussex. Initially invited in 2011 to do a few paintings as a commission, Katie visited regularly over the course of a year, creating a large body of work, drawings and paintings, inspired by the place - a mixture of the grand and domestic, part history, part lived in. In the White Drawing Room there was an ornate ceiling, an elaborate chandelier and numerous oil portraits on the wall, beneath which were arranged family photos of the present day. In the bedroom, a four poster bed and gilt edged mirror competed with table football sprawled on the patterned carpet, a red ukulele on the bedspread and a model of Dennis the Menace on the bookshelf. Cath Kidson cushions lined the window seat beneath ten feet tall shuttered windows overlooking the South Downs.
More recently Katie has been funded by Arts Council England for a year long residency at JMW Turner's House in Twickenham which has led to further invitations to make new work in Pope's Grotto, Normansfield Theatre and Strawberry Hill House.
Katie lives and works in Shoreham by Sea, West Sussex. Her work has been selected for RA Summer show 2014, Jerwood Drawing Prize 2014,
Lynne Painter Stainers 2014 & 2015, The Discerning Eye, 2015 and Drawn at Royal West of England Academy 2017. She runs her own Creative Journey classes in Shoreham and teaches regularly at West Dean College, Pallant House Gallery, Seawhite Studio, Victoria Institute, Arundel.
