material and maker 2026

Ane Christensen is an artist and maker working in metal, with a practice spanning over 25 years.

Ane grew up in Scandinavia and its strong cultural anticipation and celebration of light continues to have a profound influence on her work and practice. The theme of presence and absence of light runs through every piece she makes. Parallel, recurring inspirations are the urban landscape, optical illusion and negative space. All Ane’s work begins with the simple geometry of cylinders, bowl forms and flat sheet. She often works with metal rods and wire, used like three-dimensional line drawings to frame space and disrupt the density of her material.

"Metal to me is a challenging material. It is always slow to work and there is never a short cut or an easy option. The reward is its incredible nuance and complexity. Metal can span from heavy and dense to lace like delicacy. It can be dark and quiet or reflecting all the light. It can be raw and fluid yet hold the perfect crisp line.

I couldn’t work in any other material."
