Annie is a designer and maker. Her practice is an ongoing exploration of the familiar and symbolic form of the spoon - an object rooted in modest utility, daily ritual and quiet positivity. Working slowly and with full focus, she continually refines and assesses each piece, considering how people will interact with it, it’s form and balance and it’s craftsmanship.
Annie uses hand tools; saw, axe and knives and works from her home in Sussex. With an education in silversmithing and visual art, and experience as a product designer and jeweller, she has developed a wide range of skills. These experiences have laid the foundation for a transition to her true passion: working with wood to create handheld and deeply human objects.
This collection combines both functional and non functional pieces made from sustainably sourced wild cherry and beech, harvested in Sussex. Some of the cherry pieces have been blackened using a natural food-safe ebonising technique common to traditional furniture making. The beech comes from a branch of an ancient tree in Cooksbridge, believed to be older than the village itself. Spalting - a naturally occurring pattern caused by fungi - can be seen in some of these pieces. The main trunk of the tree remains standing.
