Our planet is a complex and chaotic place; I find the best healing is to engage with the natural world using the senses. For me this is through listening to nature’s sounds – a somatic listening. I take many solitary walks in the Peak District moorlands and Dales as this is my home landscape. The works represent particular experiences of listening to the landscape and to movements which are then translated into sculptural form. The principle element in many of my works is space: when you pay attention to sound, you also hear the shape of silence.

These are not literal interpretations of landscapes or weather; rather essence of the elemental world: Water trickling, flowing, twisting and gushing (Surges). Wind breezing, gusting, roaring or blowing (Wind Rush). Moments of deep silence and stillness in the unfolding landscape, or of rest from the activity of everyday life (Bridging Forms).

I have worked with ceramics for 45 years: teaching and exhibiting widely in Europe and USA. During that time, the aim of my work has been to engage the viewer by creating sculptures which seemingly hold polarities: poised for movement and yet sitting with stillness, celebrating material form with a nod to immaterial mystery.
