Becky Little

tell me a story 2025

Becky Little is an artist and builder based in Fife, Scotland. With a background in conservation, architecture, and materials research, she weaves heritage traditions with an innovative, ecological approach to making. Recognizing our porous place in the world, she works with foraged earths and clays to explore materiality and transformation. Her practice examines how natural processes and rhythms—of which we are a part—manifest across time and are rooted in place.
Drawing from archaeological artefacts, historic building repairs, and the analysis of ancient materials, she combines craft techniques to create a wide range of sculptural forms, from small, intimate objects to large-scale structures and installations. At the heart of her creative approach is a commitment to natural, tactile materials—infinitely recyclable, able to return safely to the land, and rich with sensory experience. The gathering and processing of raw earth is central to a seasonal, embodied practice that relies on deep knowledge of place.
Her recent body of work, Treasures from Dirt, explores polished clay spheres known as dorodango (Japanese for “mud dumpling”). These hand-held globes, formed from local Fife aggregates blended with a small amount of Cornish clay, transform gritty soil into luminous objects. In their making, they embody restoration and re-storying—revealing how both land and self can be nurtured through a nature-centred approach. By highlighting the beauty and diversity of ubiquitous materials such as soil, Becky seeks to give voice to processes and elements that are fragile, threatened, and overlooked.

Becky has over 30 years of experience working at the intersection of construction, art, and teaching. After earning a degree in Combined Arts, she became a craft fellow with Historic Environment Scotland, specializing in traditional mortars. She later founded Rebearth, a successful company dedicated to vernacular building and creative practice.

Her work has been widely exhibited, including the creation of earth renders for the Dubai Majlis Show Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show (2019) and her current participation in A Fragile Correspondence at the V&A Dundee. In 2024, she published Earthbound Orkney, a book accompanying an exhibition and series of events exploring earth materials and place. She is also studying part-time for an MA in Contemporary Art and Archaeology at UHI Orkney.
