The earth works for Claire.

"It provides the pigments, the soya beans and the flax.  It provides inspiration through wild landscape - this time, reflections of Scotland. Driving up through the Borders I see sloping fields of stubble - the remains of harvest. In the north-west Highlands I see the mountains and glens covered in peat, moss, heather, stunted trees, running streams and lochs of rippling water. Beaches of sand and gneiss rock, backed by the grasses of the machair.

The weather brings its own rewards through changing light. Sometimes grey, misty or rain-sodden. Sometimes glowing with sunlight. I can amble, sit and become absorbed. Observe the remains of old sheep fanks, huts, barns and dwellings, the rise and fall of the hills and glens. I can listen to the wind. Scotland offers me solitude, stillness and silence."
