Fiona Rutherford
playful 2024
Fiona’s tapestries play with space and colour to capture moods and connections, the fragments of stories, poems and songs. She is fascinated by the intimacy between weaving and story telling. Fiona loves colour and playing with its impact. Weaving in mainly cotton and linen yarns her colour palate moves from the vibrant and playful
to the contemplative.
The imagery is a careful balance of patterns, symbols and mark making. Japanese art and textiles have been a major influence on her work and in particular the visual aesthetics of space. She likes to weave in strips that bring together seemingly unconnected elements, like the edge or fragment of something else. Stitching and tapering edges make reference to the human history held in cloth.
Fiona’s recent Improvisation tapestries explore this theme on a smaller scale. As the title suggests they are created and woven directly at the loom with only an idea of the shape it will take. The pleasure is in the weaving and the story that unfolds. Fine threads tangle naturally as the tapestry is being woven to create the suggestion of another faded surface.
