Fliff’s work is rooted in repetition – of forms, materials and gestures and how these come together to evoke memory and meaning. In this exhibition, Collections, Fliff reflects on two of the domestic objects that she collects and that she is drawn to making: plates and jugs. Repetition is central to her making process and in the way the grouped pieces create rhythm, connection and narrative. A single plate suggests function; a group begins to suggest a story, giving significance to the ordinary.
There is also comfort in repetition: in the rhythm of the studio, in the act of pressing the same piece of lace into clay, in the subtle variations that occur when the hand intervenes. No two pieces are ever exactly alike - the imperfections and irregularities are intentional, reminders of the human touch behind the work.
This work invites viewers to consider their own relationship to objects - what they collect, what they keep, and why. It is intended to be altered and handled. The plate stack and the jug group can be altered, the individual pieces examined and moved. This is a shining story connected by form, tone and texture. A changing Collection.
