Frances Bloomfield

tell me a story 2025

Frances Bloomfield’s work can best be described as a series of fascinating dreamscapes exquisitely created in three-dimensional collage. She uses a variety of materials but predominantly her own photographs, which she manipulates and combines in intriguing ways. Each piece is like a small theatre set which plays with space, scale and perspective to draw the viewer into the curious worlds she creates. The subject matter varies from the domestic to the industrial to the natural but there are recurrent themes throughout her body of work. Notably there is often a suggestion of parallel realities – it might be a juxtaposition of what is considered ‘real’ and what is imagined or the conflict between the façade and what might be really occurring behind or beyond it. However the meanings of these scenarios are not prescriptive and it is for the viewer to contemplate and reflect upon their own interpretation of the pieces.
The main inspiration for her work has been travelling both in the UK and Europe, discovering and photographing the hidden and the unexpected in both the urban and natural landscape. The other most essential influences to Bloomfield’s work are literary, notably: Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino and The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard.
Bloomfield has established a strong reputation as a contemporary artist working in a broadly Surrealist tradition. She is represented by a number of UK galleries and has exhibited widely in Britain, Europe and USA. In 2015 she was selected for Aesthetica’s long list and has had work selected for the London Group Open, East Sussex Open, Sussex Downs Open and The Discerning Eye.
