Helen Dugdale
display and function 2026
Helen is a Designer/Maker of Contemporary Jewellery and Metalwork with a workshop located in Northamptonshire. After studying a BA, she went on to complete an MA in Jewellery, Silversmithing & Related Products at Birmingham City University in 2001.
While on an 18 month Design Enterprise Fellowship Scheme, Helen remained in Birmingham Jewellery Quarter in a shared workshop for a number of years, later returning to the local area and running regular Silver Jewellery making workshops and Beading & Wirework classes.
Helen is now, once again, focusing on designing and making her own range of Jewellery, Metal Bowls and Hollow Forms.
Through her work, Helen explores the invisible bindings that exist within us, those that can restrict and hold us back … set by both ourselves and others, at times so tight to create an almost conditioned state of heart and mind.
Visually drawn to the linen bindings used in the ancient practice of mummification to preserve and protect the dead on their journey to the afterlife … these have come to represent the sense of immobility which can prevent us from feeling and acting the way we were originally born to. It explores the human need to protect ourselves and others through both life and death and how over protection can be the wrappings that bind us.
Helen continues to explore this concept through her collection of Bowls and Bound Hollow Forms and this is also an ongoing source of inspiration for the interlocked circular elements which make up her Bound Collection of Jewellery.
