Janene’s ceramic vessels are inspired by organic forms and weathered surfaces, suggesting objects that might be found in nature rather than made. Low-fired and rarely glazed, the work retains the raw, tactile qualities of clay. The pieces have a quiet, understated presence, as though uncovered from wild or abandoned landscapes.
A wide range of techniques informs Janene’s practice. Many surfaces emerge through long periods of experimentation and through processes that resist precise control. Fire, mark-making and other elemental methods play a part, allowing chance and material to influence the final form. Each piece becomes a unique and spontaneous collaboration with these forces.
