The Rust series emerged from a sense of dislocation - a dystopian counterpart to another series of works, the Lichen series.

Where Lichen finds quiet hope in nature's reclaiming, Rust sits at a harder edge: the beauty of industrial wastelands, of abandoned places, of things breaking down but not yet broken.

These forms are poised at the point of collapse, and yet something in them holds. That tension is the work. Threaded through the series are questions about consumption and throwaway culture. Janene took the tin can - that icon of mass production, immortalised by Warhol - and pushed it somewhere darker. Crushed, distorted, rusted with time, these vessels carry the marks of a world that makes and discards without pause.

Work in this series is thrown and altered. Surfaces are created using terracotta and wild clays with oxides but no glaze.
