Abstract aesthetic 2025

Joanna is a ceramic artist originally from Poland, now based in Scotland, where she has made her home for over a decade. Her creative journey is deeply rooted in her academic background - she holds a Master’s degree in Far Eastern Studies and a Bachelor’s in Japanese Language and Literature. This foundation sparked a lasting connection to Japanese culture and aesthetics, which continues to inform her artistic voice.

Her passion for ceramics began while living and studying in Japan, where she was inspired by the quiet beauty and refined simplicity of everyday objects. That experience left a lasting impression, shaping both her visual language and her mindful approach to making.

What began as a casual pottery class in Scotland soon evolved into a dedicated practice. Joanna now creates both functional and sculptural ceramics, working primarily with stoneware clay. Her process blends wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques to create tactile, balanced forms that invite touch and evoke a sense of calm presence.

She embraces the raw, natural character of clay, often emphasising textured, uneven surfaces that have become central to her style. Influenced by Japanese design, nature, and the diverse landscapes of her travels, her work often features earthy tones, soft finishes, and organic forms.

Joanna currently works from a small, self-built home studio - a humble but personal space that allows her to create slowly, intentionally, and with a deep connection to material and process.
