Justine Randall
a woven sketchbook 2025
For Justine the motivation to get a nail frame came after seeing Sheila Hick’s miniature weavings at the Hepworth Wakefield in July 2022. She liked the unconstrained nature of Shiela’s work and was excited by the portability a nail frame offers. Her 35 x 35 cm frame fits easily into a large holdall and can be readily worked on during long trips.
Justine was planning a trip to India and the Himalayas and was keen to capture the excitement and vibrancy of the place, but also record the changes that have occurred since her first trip to India over 20 years ago in 2001.
Tapestry is a long and often slow process so she was excited about the speed a nail frame offers; most of her work is quite large so the size of the frame was a bonus, Justine took it with her on her travels and used it like a sketch book; weaving the colours, sights and experiences of each place she visited.
With these tapestries she developed her own weaving language, each piece is weftfaced and like a page in a sketchbook, records the brilliance of colour, the varied and vibrant people and the incredible and diverse landscape of India.
Just as with a sketchbook these small tapestries are experimental in nature, Justine tries out techniques, colour combinations and explores different yarns, some bought in India and others from the internet or charity shops, given by friends or unearthed from her own treasure trove of yarn supplies.
The size of the frame allows her to produce work fairly quickly and each piece often inspires the next one, or even several further versions.
With these tapestries she hopes to capture the magic, excitement and colour that travel within India inspires, while allowing her the freedom to experiment and innovate with the medium of tapestry.
