Matthew Keers

Abstract aesthetic 2025

Matthew's work is an exploration of a reductive visual language which emphasises a simple expression of colour, texture and form. With an ongoing interest in distilling and simplifying his work, he is focusing more on colour as the subject. Looking at how colours meet and edges that create unexpected forms dividing areas of colour. These intersections have become a focal point and he is exploring a scale of sharp and soft transitions to create different compositions. By layering washes of paint to make textured surfaces which he then responds to and contrasts with flat areas of colour. Ultimately Matthew is searching for certain colours that elicit meaning for him and he enjoys working with a limited number of pigments to see the range of results that can be achieved with tints, shades and washes.
