The main source of inspiration for Michèle’s work comes from the natural world and the forms, patterns and textures found around her studio.  She spends time outdoors sketching, photographing and documenting details found in nature - the mesh of branches on wintry trees, the geometric patterns in eroded rock faces or the intricate structures of pods, leaves and petals.

In the studio Michèle blends a variety of stoneware clays to achieve a range of colours in which to create her forms. All her pieces are hand built using a range of techniques; pinching, coiling and slab building. Once the basic form has been constructed, the piece is allowed to dry slowly and during this phase it is altered by drawing onto the surface and hand carving into the clay. As the piece gradually dries it is refined by degrees.

Once fully dry the forms are biscuit fired to around 950C before glaze firing to around 1200C. Michèle usually prefers to leave large areas of my work unglazed to allow the natural colour and texture of the ceramic to be seen and to preserve evidence of the carving process.  The surface texture, relief and the shadows created by the carved areas are key elements of her designs.
