sculptural ceramics 2026

Time, erosion and the loss of permanence is a recurring element in Nigel’s work which is invariably ambiguous in nature.  For him the transformation of clay into sculptural objects is a reminder of our relationship to the earth, to nature, and, the transience of life. For as long as Nigel can remember, he has been fascinated in equal measure by archaeology, ancient artefacts, and the ever-changing forces of nature. He is drawn to the weathered and decaying qualities of objects and the sense of history they can engender.

From the initial construction of a form to the subsequent application of abstract mark making rendered to its surface, Nigel strives to achieve a dialogue between the ancient and the modern, the past and the present. Some pieces may express an emotional state or a personal response to the events life throws at us, the works however remain impartial.

Much of Nigel’s current work is informed by the dichotomy between what is built and what is eroded and represents a tension between human agency and natural time, or creation and decay.
