collections 2025

As with much of Paul’s artwork, Erasers was born out of a divining for found objects, which has led to a series of collections over the years including footballs, dice, single gloves, fruit and veg net bags, and hairbands. The longest running ‘anthology’ has been the pencil erasers which started in 1999 with one etched with ‘I AM BORED’.
Writing on erasers is a thing; often associated with kids and classrooms, it is a form of self-expression, identity, or a means of covertly communicating during a lesson, as well as being strangely satisfying with a biro on the ultra-smooth rubber surface. Ostensibly though, from a makers’ perspective, Paul thinks erasers should be pristine tools, meant for rendering mistakes invisible, but most of his collection are manky or defunct, and he wouldn’t go near a drawing with them, defeating their purpose, making them obsolete. Their redundancy has opened a door to a repurposing, and with an ever-evolving arrangement, the stacks of erasers in particular, have become maquettes for mammoth Henry Moore’esque sculptures that Paul hopes to make one day.
