Paul James
Stillness
Paul chooses not to glaze his work as each piece is about the making process, so the finishing and refinement is of the upmost importance, there is nowhere to hide as nothing is covered, what you see and feel is the natural material, it’s like running your hands over a piece of marble. The final stage of sealing waxing and polishing brings
the natural surface to life.
The black and white series is always thrown in pairs, the rims are then dissected and switched, ie the black rim onto the white bowl & the white rim onto the black bowl, the rims are then rejoined creating a calm graphic presence. After the final firing the piece is sealed and polished creating subtle natural sheen.
The porcelain annular vessels are thrown in two sections in varying shades of grey, they are then joined using white or blue porcelain which creates the seam running through them. The final process of polishing leaves a subtle sheen letting the natural beauty of the porcelain to shine through.
The elliptical bowls are among the most complex pieces that Paul makes. The bowls are thrown then dissected and rejoined on the bias to create the white seams running through them. The bases are then turned off center so the bowl sits at an angel creating movement in both the seam and the object. The final process of polishing
leaves a subtle sheen letting the natural beauty of the porcelain to shine through.
