Robyn Neild
constructed 2025
Robyn Neild is an artist working in Bronze depicting fluidity of movement and delicacy of form. Traditionally solid, static and masculine, the heavy metal becomes an ethereal, complex and feminine material, evolving into a new potentiality. Her work explores the human conditions of loss, decay, resistance, hope, and the search for sanctuary, drawing inspiration from the Kent marshlands and the stark beauty of Dungeness.
Neild captures nature’s tipping point, where the transformation of decay is more beautiful than the symmetry of bloom. Bronze, with its strength and permanence contrasts with the delicate, tenuous forms she creates, fusing the tension between frailty and resilience. The unique and ephemeral quality of each piece connects with a life lived, with grief, and with perseverance in tribute to the unpredictable spontaneity of all living forms.
Pushing the limits of the 'lost wax' technique, Neild forces the molten metal into increasingly fine and fragile forms, so it will halter, leaving gaps and pauses, which are as important as the solid structure. Using foraged botanicals, and through experimentation with wax, fabric and paper, her process is intuitive as she creates her intricate forms.
Neild studied BA Fashion Design at Middlesex university and worked for years as an international illustrator, this morphed into desire for a more 3D experience and after an apprenticeship at a foundry learnt all the processes needed to cast her own work in her coastal studio. She has exhibited at galleries across the UK; winner of the sculpture prize Wales Contemporary (2020) and The Bruce Munro Studio award (2022). Neild has curated group and solo exhibitions at her communal studio gallery in Folkestone since 2017. Her proudest achievement is having a sculpture in the permanent collection of Derek Jarman’s Prospect Cottage a place of inspiration and personal connection for the artist.
