sculptural ceramics 2026

Russell Wilson is an artist based in Derbyshire, his work is eclectic in process and materials, working across different media including ceramics, feltwork sculpture and painting.

His ceramic practice centres around animals, and the stylisation and distillation of form to depict the essence of a particular creature, without necessarily showing every detail - what is left out is more important to create a successful piece that gives a sculptural quality to the work. He uses coiling and pinching techniques to slowly form his pieces. Clays are carefully considered for each animal as they will ultimately form the finished surface, which may be scraped for texture or sometimes burnished smooth. Glazes are seldom used, instead he utilses different clay slips, inlay, underglaze colour/ ceramic pencils to add details or markings. Occasionally, some pieces may feature elements of mixed media including carved wood for horns, tusks or antlers. Work is fired to stoneware in an electric kiln.

He is strongly inspired by depictions of animals from past civilizations and cultures from around the world, particularly the art of the Inuit. Another source of inspiration comes from 19th century wooden Noah's Ark animals these were often carved in a naive, stylised way often due to the craftspeople carving them having never encountered the animals they were trying to portray, giving them a slightly odd, sometimes awkward but ultimately endearing quality. He hopes in some way his pieces may reflect this inspiration.

Russell has shown his work in selected galleries in the UK over a number of years and has established a keen following for his distinctive ceramics, and numerous collectors.
