Sarah Deere-Hall

a minimal aesthetic 2024

Sarah throws understated pots with stoneware clays, creating clean, elegant profiles in a muted, natural palette.

Although focussing on form and balance, she embraces the spontaneity of the refinement processes, ensuring a unique character for each of her forms.

The juxtaposition of the raw and honed textures of the clay is at the core of her work. Each incidental mark is left visible, unhidden without glazes. Tonal interest is achieved by the application of slips (revealing brush and tool marks), metal oxides (creating matte, blistered surfaces contrasting with metallic sheens), or left raw (celebrating the natural colours and qualities of the clays). The resulting surfaces are subtle and enhance, rather than dominate, the quiet form of the pot.

The play of profile and texture brings immediacy and tactility to Sarah’s works.
