Shelagh Wilson

tell me a story 2025

These paintings emerged as Shelagh worked in sketchbooks trying to get to the heart of what interested her and to access that inner place where the dreams are. She wrote and painted and made little books, immersing herself in the processes without looking for specific outcomes.

The drama created, as prevailing deep, dark colours were overlaid with little blazes of colour, was something which became an insistent idea so she was keen to develop this. Shelagh thinks it was probably sparked by looking at 16th century paintings in The National Portrait Gallery in London.

Some of the pages of the books Shelagh made, represented small, sequestered, private universes where the mood was saturated with peace and transcendence - ordinary places affording extraordinary moments. It was this idea which she decided that she wanted to develop further in her paintings.
