Sylvia is a multi disciplined artist, working in ceramics, printmaking and jewellery. She has a permanent collection of jewellery available at the Gallery and for this exhibition Sylvia has created ‘ten pieces of silver’.

The concept originated due to the skyrocketing value of the silver as a material. Sylvia found herself challenged to be innovative and began playing with the idea of melting down and effectively recycling pieces of silver. Self taught, Sylvia’s strength is an openness to experimentation, combining methods and techniques to achieve the desired results. With an inquiring mind she is always exploring new and creative ways to develop her practice.

Through this collection Sylvia has explored various techniques, such as reticulation which requires heating the surface of the metal creating a texture, somewhat unpredictably. She has melted and fused silver to construct a bracelet. She has experimented with the lost wax process, working with Black Arts Casting, and also an interpretation of a Japanese method, a complex technique called Mitsuro Hikime, which involves stretching the wax and is prized for creating natural, wavy, and delicate patterns.

Sylvia works from her garden studio at the foot of the South Downs close to the River Arun in West Sussex, an environment which inspired the forms and textures created in her work.
