Humans have been spinning string, knotting, binding and tying for thousands of years to gather, trap and store. While many contemporary fishing net are now machine made, their knotted structure is exactly the same as archaeological fragments found in Swiss lake deposits of around six thousand years old.
Celebrating this ancient technology Tim Johnson’s ‘Net’ combines the ancient sheet bend knot with a variety of plant materials that he has harvested during his travels in Europe and hand plied into cordage. No longer a functional fishing or hunting net this wall piece becomes a gradient of fibres, a memory of harvesting days and a trace of the movement of the maker’s hand.
